POSITION: Counselor, August 11th through August 15th, 2008

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years old and possess an eagerness to work with a community that is diverse and sensitive to people with disabilities.

DESCRIPTION: Club Venture is operated by The Arc of Baltimore, and is located in North East, Maryland (Cecil County) at NorthBay Adventure approximately an hour drive north of Baltimore City. Dates are 8/11-8/15/08 inclusive. Specifically, Club Venture is a vacation experience for adults with intellectual and cognitive disabilities that emphasizes FUN and the meeting of individual needs of vacationers, a wholesome diet, adequate rest & sunshine, and the meeting of old and new friends. The heart of the camp experience is in cabin-group living. The cabin group is an experience in inter-personal relationships which offers an opportunity for each vacationer to discover his/her own individual capabilities.

We are in need of general counselors and also counselors who are certified in Maryland to administer medication. Counselors arrive 8/10/08.

DUTIES:

1. Ensure safety and well-being at all times.

2. Assist in all personal needs of campers (i.e., toileting, dressing, brushing teeth, etc.).

3. Report problems to Cabin/Program Leaders.

4. Assist with and help plan all cabin activities.

5. Try to resolve problems in cabin or program area with Cabin/Program Leader in charge before going to assistant director.

6. Assist Cabin/Program Leader in program area to which you are assigned.

7. Attend all orientation meetings.

8. Participate in opening and closing days’ cleaning and all necessary cleaning throughout sessions.

9. Perform any duties assigned by Assistant Director and/or Director

10. Other duties may be required.

Transitioning Youth Coordinator - Posted 6/24/08

The Parents’ Place of Maryland seeks an experienced, creative, self-motivated individual committed to improving services for youth with special health care needs in Maryland. The Transitioning Youth Coordinator will work on a federal grant with multiple partners. The Transitioning Youth Coordinator is responsible for establishing and coordinating a statewide Youth Advisory Council for youth with special health care needs, providing training and support for youth members, and facilitating youth participation. The Youth Coordinator will work with a project team, state transition initiatives, and agencies and organizations to incorporate health care transition elements.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and facilitating a Youth Advisory Council for youth with special health care needs that will provide leadership and capacity building to assist the state program for children and youth with special health care needs;

  • Identifying youth leaders from across the state to participate in the Youth Advisory Council

  • Providing training and support for YAC members

  • Identifying advisory roles for YAC members and facilitating youth participation

  • Maintain a database of youth leaders who can be recommended for speakers, material content reviewers and policy development

  • Assisting in the development of materials and tools to enhance health transition

  • Using a developed tool, evaluating agencies/organizations for incorporation of health care transition elements

  • Providing technical assistance to agencies/organizations to implement strategies to address identified gaps in health transition

  • Representing the project in state transition initiatives and on assigned committees and work groups

Qualifications: The position requires and individual who has excellent organizational and communication skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, and the ability and desire to think innovatively and take initiative. Knowledge of youth development and principles of self-advocacy, knowledge of state and local resources and programs serving Maryland youth, experience in establishing and maintaining a youth advisory council, recruiting diverse youth participation, facilitating group meetings, and in working effectively with state and local programs to support youth participation are required.

Hours: The Transitioning Youth Coordinator is a part-time position for 20 hours per week. Qualified individuals with disabilities or special health care need are encouraged to apply. A cover letter, resume, and list of three references must be received by July 15, 2008. Mail to:
