Establish credit and continue to monitor credit reports

Starting at age 18 parents should start considering methods for establishing credit for their child so that they can access housing resources in the future. Most landlords and all mortgage programs check credit. However, NO credit is better than BAD credit.

You can establish credit history by putting a bill in the person’s name (mobile phone, utility, etc.), obtaining a credit card and paying the balance monthly, or paying rent. Credit reports should be checked often, and issues need to be repaired. Reasonable accommodations can be made for credit issues related to disability (medical bills, etc.). You may also want to seek credit counseling for guidance.
