Guardianship and the Alternatives -- What Parents and Family Members Need to Know

November 3, 2021

The decision to pursue guardianship -- to obtain the legal authority to make decisions for another person -- is one that has many intricacies to it and should not be taken lightly. There are also many alternatives to guardianship to consider as well, which is why speaking with a qualified attorney is extremely important during the decision making process and throughout the guardianship proceeding.
Joing Elville and Associates' Managing Principal and Lead Attorney Stephen R. Elville as he offers this webinar presentation about "Guardianship and the Alternatives: What Parents and Family Members Need to Know." Topics of discussion will include:
-- What is guardianship?
-- What are the benefits and drawbacks?
-- What are the main questions every family should ask before making the decision to pursue guardianship?
-- What are some of the alternatives to guardianship?

Sensory Sundays at the B&O Railroad Museum

    November 7, 2021

Sensory Sundays at the B&O Railroad Museum are designed to create an inclusive and safe atmosphere where all visitors are welcome and supported. In order to accommodate for members of the community who identify as neurodiverse, this program promotes sensory awareness throughout the museum by altering the physical environment as appropriate. Some examples of these changes include: decreased lighting and surround sound, signage communicating the location of exhibits with sounds effects, and temporary “quiet” or “calming” zones. These zones will provide a space dedicated to decreased sensory exposure as well as sensory kits equipped with resources for visitors who need an opportunity to process their emotions and experiences. Throughout the day, visitors will be encouraged to participant in B&O Railroad Museum activities, such as a sensory-friendly train ride on the Mile One Express, a kids craft, and a sensory-friendly tour led by one of our trained staff members. There will also be an opportunity for parents to access resources provided by organizations within the community who support families with special needs children. Overall, Sensory Sundays will continue to establish the B&O Railroad Museum as a location dedicated to the support and inclusion of the neurodiverse community.

Echolalia and Autism: Its Function and Expanding Self-Generated Language

    December 2, 2021

Deborah Crawford, MS, CCC-SLP will present "Echolalia and Autism: Understanding Its Function and Expanding Self-Generated Language" on Thursday, December 2, 2021, from 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. EST as part of the CARD Fall Training Series.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may often engage in echolalia. This can present as repeating what someone has said or even lines from television shows and movies. Although it may seem meaningless, research has shown that echolalia is a purposeful function of communication. This training will discuss how children with ASD learn language and dive into the reasoning behind their usage of echolalia. The speaker will provide strategies for teaching and expanding the language of children with ASD while exploring self-generated language.

By the end of the training, attendees will be able to:

  • Discuss how children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) learn language and their usage of echolalia
  • Identify communicative functions of echolalia
  • Implement strategies for expanding echolalia into more flexible and spontaneous language
  • Education professionals, healthcare professionals, related service providers, family members and community members are all invited to attend.
