Sensory Sundays at the B&O Railroad MuseumSensory Sundays at the B&O Railroad Museum – Sensory Sundays at the B&O Railroad Museum are designed to create an inclusive and safe atmosphere where all visitors are welcome and supported. In order to accommodate for members of the community who identify as neurodiverse, this program promotes sensory awareness throughout the museum by altering the physical environment as appropriate. Some examples of these changes include: decreased lighting and surround sound, signage communicating the location of exhibits with sounds effects, and temporary “quiet” or “calming” zones. These zones will provide a space dedicated to decreased sensory exposure as well as sensory kits equipped with resources for visitors who need an opportunity to process their emotions and experiences. Throughout the day, visitors will be encouraged to participant in B&O Railroad Museum activities, such as a sensory-friendly train ride on the Mile One Express, a kids craft, and a sensory-friendly tour led by one of our trained staff members. There will also be an opportunity for parents to access resources provided by organizations within the community who support families with special needs children. Overall, Sensory Sundays will continue to establish the B&O Railroad Museum as a location dedicated to the support and inclusion of the neurodiverse community.
