Echolalia and Autism: Its Function and Expanding Self-Generated Language
December 2, 2021 –
Deborah Crawford, MS, CCC-SLP will present "Echolalia and Autism: Understanding Its Function and Expanding Self-Generated Language" on Thursday, December 2, 2021, from 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. EST as part of the CARD Fall Training Series.
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may often engage in echolalia. This can present as repeating what someone has said or even lines from television shows and movies. Although it may seem meaningless, research has shown that echolalia is a purposeful function of communication. This training will discuss how children with ASD learn language and dive into the reasoning behind their usage of echolalia. The speaker will provide strategies for teaching and expanding the language of children with ASD while exploring self-generated language.
By the end of the training, attendees will be able to:
Discuss how children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) learn language and their usage of echolalia
Identify communicative functions of echolalia
Implement strategies for expanding echolalia into more flexible and spontaneous language
Education professionals, healthcare professionals, related service providers, family members and community members are all invited to attend.
