SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT EMPOWERMENT CONFERENCE -- Executive Functioning Challenges in Children and Teens: What do we know? What can we do?
October 19, 2019 –
Children and teens with executive functioning challenges may have difficulty getting organized, approach tasks haphazardly, forget to turn in homework, struggle to remember important information, and have problems regulating their emotions and behavior. Weaknesses in these brain-based “executive functions” have far-reaching developmental impact, causing students to repeatedly fall short of expectations at home and at school. Parents and teachers may feel overwhelmed and helpless as they try to help.
However, a better understanding of executive functioning and how it develops can guide our efforts to help struggling youth, as well as bring hope and compassion into our relationships with these students. As we build our own understanding, we change not only how we approach our efforts to help, but also the way we respond to students’ missteps.
In this presentation, Dr. Cooper-Kahn will discuss what is known about executive functioning, how change happens, and how we can help struggling students. She will present a framework for how to intervene to support youth in the short term and to help them to build better executive skills over the long haul.
The presence of coexisting or additional disorders can make the diagnosis and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders very complex; however, correct diagnoses may facilitate the treatment and management of all the disorders present. Ms. Odenwalt will discuss the intertwined effects and treatment implications of ASD co-existent with ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Substance Abuse, Tourette’s Syndrome, etc.
