Mission and Programs
Our mission is simple – to improve the lives of individuals with autism and the people who care for them. We accomplish this through a variety of programs and services, all of which are offered FREE of charge.
THE PATHFINDERS FOR AUTISM RESOURCE CENTER
The Pathfinders for Autism Resource Center is the cornerstone of our efforts to serve Maryland’s families by:
- providing timely, accurate autism-specific information and resources
- responding personally to inquiries via telephone, email and Facebook
- distributing monthly “PFA Tips” articles on a variety of topics.
The Pathfinders for Autism Resource Center helps families navigate the often confusing and complex array of services, treatment, and programs available to them. Our staff receives calls from parents who have just received a diagnosis; caregivers of adults with autism in need of support services; individuals with autism who are seeking services for themselves; and professionals working with clients with autism.
The Pathfinders for Autism website is a critical link to the thousands of families and professionals we serve throughout Maryland. The site offers a searchable, online database of more than 2,200 providers along with informative articles and a calendar of autism-specific events.
Pathfinders, Inc. (d/b/a Pathfinders for Autism) was established as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in February 2000 by parents of children with autism, including Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer William “B.J.” Surhoff and his wife Polly Winde Surhoff. After 18 months of development, Pathfinders for Autism launched the Pathfinders for Autism Resource Center – offering knowledgeable staff and a searchable online database to help families in Maryland find critical service providers quickly and efficiently.
Rebecca has over 25 years experience in the nonprofit sector. She joined Pathfinders for Autism in 2007 and has served as Executive Director since 2010. Prior to joining Pathfinders for Autism, Rebecca’s professional experience focused around environmental and social justice issues in Maryland and Baltimore City. Her strengths include community organizing, program development and implementation, volunteer management, partnership building, fundraising and organization management. Rebecca was instrumental in advocating for the coverage of autism treatment services by health insurance plans sold in Maryland resulting in the passage of legislation in 2012. She is an appointed member of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Autism Workgroup and sits on many committees where she advocates for individuals with autism and their families. Rebecca was born and raised in Baltimore. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland Baltimore County and currently lives in Baltimore County with her husband and two daughters.

ABOUT THE PATHFINDERS FOR AUTISM RESOURCE CENTER
“I appreciate that when I call Pathfinders for Autism, whether I’m just looking for a resource or I’m calling in distress, I get a friendly voice and a person who really ‘gets it’.”
“Thank you for blessing thousands of us with your resources, wisdom and humor. You all are the best!!!”
“Thank you so much for your help. I can’t tell you how thankful I am for this, I feel like a giant weight has been lifted.”
“I was looking specifically for help for my 12-year-old son who has Asperger’s. He was suffering through some really tough middle school years at school. Through a link on your website, I found a terrific school for him. He has been attending that school since December and is a changed child. Without your site, I might have found the school, but it I would have lost valuable time in searching for it. I have also used your website for the comprehensive Calendar of Events. I have already attended several events that I would not have otherwise known about.”
