What Families Need to Know About Planning for a Loved One with Special Needs

August 6, 2021

Webinar attendees will come to understand what is involved in the planning process for a special needs family and the importance of preserving your loved one’s financial security and quality of life.
Presented by Elville and Associates’ Managing Principal and Lead Attorney Stephen R. Elville, this webinar is a broad reaching discussion about planning for their loved one with special needs.
The key issues of understanding the role of public benefits, making decisions about the future, Maryland ABLE, creating flexibility in your planning, and using estate planning and trusts to protect assets will be discussed along with the types of special needs trusts and their specific purposes (along with who the decision makers and beneficiaries can be in these trusts). Also, to be touched upon will be the “planning team concept” — how your planning team (attorney, financial advisor, CPA, and others) — can work together to help provide your family peace of mind during the special needs planning process.
To register and receive the webinar link ahead of time, please click here. Should you have questions ahead of time, please contact Community Relations Director Jeff Stauffer at 443-216-9626 x117.
Open to clients, advisors and the general public. For Certified Financial Planners, CPAs, and other professionals 1.5 continuing education hours will be available for attending this presentation. We look forward to hosting you!

Mealtime Issues and Feeding Disorder Treatment for Children on the Autism Spectrum

August 17, 2021

Food selectivity and refusal is common in children with and without developmental delay. Yet, autism spectrum disorder adds an additional layer of complexity as refusal at mealtime rarely resolves on its own. In this free webinar, experienced therapist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst Ben Sarcia will discuss how to effectively teach food selective children on the autism to eat new foods in a manner that can be generalized outside of the clinic setting and implemented by caregivers. This is especially important because oftentimes, caregivers are directed to non-behavioral interventions that do not account for the function of behavior and simply don’t address problematic mealtime behavior in a way that produces meaningful gains. With this in mind, success in developing appropriate replacement mealtime behaviors considers the child’s current food repertoire, skill deficits, performance deficits, learning style, and the feasibility of implementation of intervention in the home, school, and community settings. Attention will also be given to recognizing the physiological symptoms that may require additional consultation and collaboration with other ABA therapists or teams.

The Black Side of Autism

August 25, 2021

Join the State Public Health Autism Resource Center (SPHARC) for this important workshop that will look at Autism from a cultural perspective and consider the stigma within black community.

Workshop Summary/Description:
This workshop will highlight the importance of cultural awareness when working with Black families of disabled children. Beginning with a detailed analysis and explanation of culture broadly, the presenter will lead the conversation toward helping attendees understand their cultural development and biases. Attendees will learn how their own biases can lead to “resistance” with families. Attendees will learn why cultural sensitivity is important in identifying, assessing, and providing services to autistic children and their families. The workshop will continue with the theoretical understanding of Black culture in relation to family beliefs, values, religion, and economic status and its implications for treatment. The presenter will also discuss the methods used to support parents, caregivers, and program leaders in the understanding of culture and shift their practice to be more culturally responsible. The aim of this presentation will illustrate the current state of the field in the area of cultural competence when servicing diverse communities as well as opening the door to having more providers incorporate the discussion of culture into treatment.

Workshop Objectives:
1. Participants will learn the importance of cultural competence and the important role it plays in the Black disability community
2. Participants will gain knowledge on how their own biases and unknown ableist views may affect their work
3. Participants will learn how to have culturally responsible discussions with the parents and educators

Speaker: Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC
President and CEO of Autism in Black Inc (https://www.autisminblack.org/)
