The Gut-Brain Connection in Autism: From Research to PracticeThis is a training for parents, caregivers, family members, and clinical providers of a children with autism. Attendees will gain an understanding of the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in autism, why GI issues are so common in this population, the impact GI symptoms has on individuals with autism and their surrounding community, and how to identify and help manage GI symptoms. Attendees will also hear an overview of the latest research on the gut-brain connection, including the gut microbiome, in autism.

–
Sensory Sundays at the B&O Railroad MuseumSensory Sundays at the B&O Railroad Museum are designed to create an inclusive and safe atmosphere where all visitors are welcome and supported. In order to accommodate for members of the community who identify as neurodiverse, this program promotes sensory awareness throughout the museum by altering the physical environment as appropriate. Some examples of these changes include: decreased lighting and surround sound, signage communicating the location of exhibits with sounds effects, and temporary “quiet” or “calming” zones. These zones will provide a space dedicated to decreased sensory exposure as well as sensory kits equipped with resources for visitors who need an opportunity to process their emotions and experiences. Throughout the day, visitors will be encouraged to participant in B&O Railroad Museum activities, such as a sensory-friendly train ride on the Mile One Express, a kids craft, and a sensory-friendly tour led by one of our trained staff members. There will also be an opportunity for parents to access resources provided by organizations within the community who support families with special needs children. Overall, Sensory Sundays will continue to establish the B&O Railroad Museum as a location dedicated to the support and inclusion of the neurodiverse community.

Voices of U.S. (Unified Speakers) Self Advocacy group meetingWe have established a self- advocacy group that welcomes not only the individuals with disabilities that we serve but others as well. The group is called Voices of U.S. (Unified Speakers).
All Voices of U.S meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Mid-Atlantic Main Office (2109 Laurel Bush Road, Bel Air MD, 21015).
Each meeting is a social event where people can discuss whatever recent success they have had, current events and hold fundraisers.All attendees receive food and drink at every meeting.

This will be a judgment-free zone where neurodiverse individuals can share their anxieties and fears while asking the questions some have been too embarrassed to ask.
Class will be held at Barrier-Free's Life Skills & Social Studio - 7520 Main St #103 Sykesville, MD 21784. Class tuition is $80. We offer a two-class trial period, details at the link!
