Online Social Skills Group for Pre-Teens
June 18, 2019 –
. This summer we will be offering an Online Social Skills Group that utilizes the PEERS ® Curriculum taught by Liza Ross, BCBA. I have attached our flyer for you. This group is designed for pre-teens ages 8-14 years. We limit the group to 8 participants and it is a seven week course from June 18th to July 30th.
Meetings take place Tuesday evenings, and the first meeting will be on June 18th. Each week there will be a social group meeting from 5-6pm followed by a parent meeting from 6-7pm. The first meeting on June 18th will only be the parent meeting from 6-7pm. During the parent meetings, the BCBA, Liza Ross, will teach the parents the upcoming lesson that will be covered in the next week’s social group meeting. She will also talk with parents about helpful tips to assist their child during the social group, discuss the homework, and have time for any specific questions or concerns a parent has about their child. All of these meetings are live-stream, through our video conferencing software, ZOOM, which is also HIPAA compliant. Nothing is pre-recorded, and all parents will be able to see each other, interact, and ask questions. Parent participation is required.
The Social Group will meet every Tuesday from 5-6pm starting June 25th. Parents are required to support their child during these group meetings to ensure they participate in the skills practice time and stay on-task. The Social Group will first meet in the general online meeting room. Everyone will be able to see each other and the BCBA leading the group. Liza Ross will present a short lesson on the skill they are practicing and show some videos as models for the skill (the videos are provided on the UCLA PEERS website to support the lesson topics). Then she will assign each participant a partner and push them into “breakout rooms” to practice the skill. These “breakout rooms” are mini-private rooms, so there will only be the two participants in the online breakout room. They will be able to practice the targeted skill with each other (and with parental support). Liza will be able to join each room to observe and give feedback to the participants. After they practice the skill, she will close the breakout rooms and everyone will rejoin the main meeting room. They will end the session with a group social activity.
There is homework assigned weekly which will include the participants practicing making phone calls to each other as well as text messaging. We understand that texting is such an important part of social life, so we want to make sure to address this topic and have them practice the skill to build their knowledge and confidence. The cost of the group is $240 which includes both the parent and social group meetings.
I hope this is helpful in describing the group in more detail. If you have any questions or if you would like to register for the summer group please feel free to contact me directly at 703.635.6846.
