In 2003; a group of Calvert County parents decided to form a parent advocacy group to help families coping with the challenges of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Since January 2004; the Autism-Asperger Association of Calvert County; Inc. (AAACC) has held monthly educational meetings during the school year for parents and other interested individuals. Topics have included educational strategies; speech and language therapy; recreational opportunities and services provided by the Calvert County Health Department; the Calvert County Public Schools and the Maryland State Department of Education Division of Rehabilitative Services (DORS). Other meeting topics ranged from estate planning to medical interventions such as the DAN! protocol. Future AAACC meeting topics will include changes to special education law; understanding & preparing for successful IEP meetings; transition into adult life and a variety of other topics to assist families in their search for information; resources and programs for children & adults on the autism spectrum. Meetings are held in Prince Frederick and are open to the public. The AAACC is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. All donations and membership fees are tax deductible. Members receive referrals to agencies and health care professionals; parent-to-parent referrals; access to the AAACC lending library and assistance in preparing for IEP meetings.
