What to Do During a Traffic Stop

EVERYONE feels anxiety when they see that police car light up behind them. You begin to wonder, “Am I in trouble?” “What did I do wrong?” It can make slowing down your brain difficult in that moment and think about what you need to do. So it’s time to start thinking about what you should do BEFORE you get pulled over. The goal is to have a safe interaction during a traffic stop.

Presented by: Sgt. Moe Greenberg, Baltimore County Police, Sgt. Brian Miller, Baltimore County Police, Officer Laurie Reyes, Montgomery County Police, Officer Tara Bond, Montgomery County Police, Shelly McLaughlin, PFA

Traffic Stop Toolkits are available. Each toolkit includes:
• A printed copy of “PFA Tips: What to Do During a Traffic Stop
• An envelope which lists the steps to follow on one side, and tips about autism for the officer on the other side. The envelope can be used to hold the person’s registration card, insurance card, and a copy of the PFA Tips article.
• A laminated card (with clips) to attach to the driver’s visor with the top five instructions of what the driver needs to remember to do during the traffic stop
• Autism and Developmental Disabilities disclosure cards

Why do we encourage individuals to disclose their diagnosis to law enforcement officers?
