I provide art therapy services to artist-clients with disabilities, individuals 12 years of age or older, in a private studio environment within Make Studio, located in north central Baltimore City. Most often my clients identify as having “invisible disabilities” such as autism or neurodivergence and/or Intellectual Development Disorder (IDD). Disabled artist-clients are supported in their own trial and error processes toward finding satisfaction with what and how they are creating. Using communication supports as needed, clients are supported toward identifying communication, socioemotional, and/or behavioral goals for our creative work together. For example, some artist-clients are interested in practicing direct, narrative communication about their process and work. Some may wish to practice decision making and social skills through art making. Other artist-clients are interested in processing difficult lived experiences such as exclusion, loneliness, and lack of access. Still others may be interested in working on developing and deepening strategies for flexibly navigating potentially overwhelming sensory or unexpected experiences within a safe, creative environment. These examples are just a few possibilities. There are so many ways in which art making can support personal growth and development of self. I specialize in collaborative, self-determined creative work with disabled individuals, engaging with care teams and families as needed and/or as desired by artist-clients. I would love to explore if art therapy might be a good fit for you/your loved one. Please email me to schedule a chat: cathy@goucherartx.com
