A specialized inpatient unit at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC is available for children and adolescents having acute behavioral and emotional problems; and who have Autism Spectrum Disorder; intellectual disabilities; and other developmental disorders.The unit provides acute stabilization and specialized evaluation; treatment; and referral.

Diagnostic Assessment and Treatment

Assessment and treatment are multidisciplinary and are designed for each child. Methods may include:

• Medication review and medication therapy
• Medical assessment and referrals
• Individual, group, and family therapies
• Functional behavior assessment
• Behavioral interventions
• Behavior training with family and agencies
• Social skills training
• Adaptive and self-care skills training
• Educational and developmental learning center
• Disposition planning
• Parent management training
• Problem-solving training
• Self-management training
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
• Dialectical Behavior Therapy

The family is involved with inpatient treatment. Opportunities for visits from family, friends, and agency providers are built into each child’s daily activity schedule.

Staff

The program staff includes a variety of professionals from psychology, social work, nursing, psychiatry, and counseling. Ongoing training is provided in positive behavioral supports, positive approaches, and effective techniques to support the needs of the pediatric inpatient population.

Dental services are available at four health center locations – Dover, Newark, Northeast Wilmington, and Wilmington. Services include teeth cleanings, fillings, and tooth extractions. We work closely with oral health specialists for more complex services. Westside provides dental services to all patients over the age of one.
