By Their Side was formed in 1965 by Maryland parents concerned about who would advocate for their sons and daughters with an intellectual/developmental disability after they were gone. A family-funded, non-profit organization, By Their Side offers lifelong advocacy services as arranged by families or trustees. Services may begin immediately to help address a particular need or through regular visits and monitoring contacts. Lifelong advocacy services may also be pre-arranged to begin when the parents are gone. Experienced By Their Side Personal Advocates work from home offices throughout Maryland.

We do things differently. We work with people with autism and other developmental disabilities and their families to help them thrive. But we also focus on re-imagining human services systems. This systems change work often takes longer, but it can be transformational, and that’s why we’re here.
