Children with disabilities from birth to age 21 may be eligible for special education. Federal law defines “children with disabilities” as having any of the following types of disabilities.

• Deaf-blindness
• Deafness
• Developmental Delay
• Emotional Disability
• Hearing Impairment
• Intellectual Disability
• Multiple Disabilities
• Orthopedic Impairment
• Other Health Impairment
• Specific Learning Disability
• Speech or Language Impairment
• Traumatic Brain Injury
• Visual Impairment (including blindness)

AA-SECAC is a partnership between parents, families, community leaders, advocates, educators and administrators. The committee works to enhance services available to students with disabilities and to advocate for positive changes in special education in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Active, involved parents and supporters of children receiving special education services comprise the Anne Arundel Special Education Citizens' Advisory Committee (AA-SECAC). AA-SECAC meets monthly with the director and staff of the Division of Special Education and other Anne Arundel County Public Schools staff to share information and help provide direction for special education services.

Psychiatrists and licensed mental health clinicians at AAMC provide consultations and medication management for hospital patients and patients in the Emergency Department's (ED) Mental Health Evaluation Unit. Consults within the hospital occur at the request of the patient, a family member, or a member of the patient's healthcare team. Our psychiatrists and clinicians assess patient needs and provide guidance to appropriate hospital staff, and/or referrals to inpatient psychiatric facilities, outpatient psychiatrists, therapists, or other community support services.
